Web Host SoftLayer Partners with OS Nexus to Launch Storage Servers

Web hosting provider SoftLayer Technologies (www.softlayer.com) announced on Tuesday it has partnered with OS Nexus (www.osnexus.com) to launch QuantaStor Storage Servers.
The new servers provide dedicated mass storage appliances with high level of cost-effectiveness, control, and scalability, according to the press release.
They are ideal for a range of high performance storage solutions, including private cloud storage, eliminating CAPEX requirements that often hinder deployments.
QuantaStor Storage Servers offer the OS NEXUS QuantaStor Storage Appliance OS, the industry’s first virtual storage solution designed for global manageability, on SoftLayer Mass Storage dedicated servers.
The SAN + NAS storage system offers a range of advanced storage features including thin-provisioning, and remote-replication, making it well suited for a broad set of applications including VM application deployments, virtual desktops, as well as web and application servers.
“When you need massive storage, having the right amount is just one part of the equation,” said Nathan Day, chief scientist for SoftLayer. “The more storage you have, the more you need location independence, global access, and robust tools to manage it. The QuantaStor Storage Server provides the perfect combination of performance economics, scalability and manageability that our customers deserve.”
Other key features include hard disk or solid state drive support, storage management through a simplified interface, iSCSI support for 1GbE and 10GbE client support for Windows XP, 7, 2003 Server, 2008 Server, VMware ESX/ESXi, Windows Hyper-V; Macintosh OS X, XenServer 5.x, and Linux (all major distributions, open-iSCSI, and hardware initiators), NFSv3 and NFSv4 support, and thin provisioning/over provisioning to allocate volumes without having to dedicate storage until needed.
QuantaStor Mass Storage Servers starts at $1,039 per month for up to 12 drives and $1,139 per month for up to 24 drives.

Web Host Hosting Ireland Offers Free iPhone App

Web hosting provider Hosting Ireland (www.hostingireland.ie) announced on Wednesday that it has launched its free iPhone app. According to the web host, the app will give existing and new customers the ability to access various domain and hosting services while on the go.
This news comes a few weeks after Hosting Ireland launched its online backup service CloudBox.
Hosting Ireland says its app will allow customers to search, check and buy domains. According to the press release, it is the first iPhone app for the Irish domain and hosting market.
Customers can view active products and services, pay invoices, and check historical billing information. Customers are also able to view, edit and update contract details.
Support tickets can be submitted directly from the app and customers can reach Hosting Ireland’s customer support via a direct dial from the app, according to the press release.
The mobile app gives access to the Whois as well, according to Hosting Ireland.
“The Hosting Ireland iPhone app is a further demonstration of our commitment to our valued customers. We are constantly looking at ways of making life easier for our clients and also of encouraging potential new customers to try out our market leading products and services,” Jonathan Bate managing director of Hosting Ireland said in a statement. “Life is getting busier and we feel that the app will be a welcome tool for the online community.”
Hosting Ireland says it developed its app in house. The app was designed for web developers, programmers, resellers and clients with a portfolio of sites to manage and monitor their services remotely.
At the end of August, New Zealand web hosting provider FlexiHost launched a domain lookup and registration iPhone app.

Web Host FatCow Supports Breast Cancer Research for Fifth Consecutive Year

Web hosting provider FatCow Hosting (www.fatcow.com) announced on Tuesday that it is supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month by donating a portion of sales to the American Cancer Society.
According to the press release, FatCow will donate a portion of the proceeds from every new hosting account sign-up in October to the breast cancer division of the non-profit organization.
“This cause means a lot to our staff members,” Paul Bukhovko, marketing manager for FatCow said in a statement. “Many of us have had our lives personally impacted by breast cancer, and we want to do everything we can to raise awareness and hopefully find a cure. Every year, when we plan our calendar, we already know what we’re doing in October. It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and FatCow will be a part of it.”
FatCow says customers that sign-up with FatCow will not only be making a contribution towards breast cancer research, education and awareness, but also will receive a free domain with unlimited storage, bandwidth and mailboxes.
“We’re always looking to grow our FatCow community and we want customers to join us in this awareness campaign, which is why, for the fifth straight year, we’re setting aside a portion of the proceeds from every new customer who signs up in October and putting it toward breast cancer research and advocacy programs,” Bukhovko said in a statement.

Two UK web hosting providers announced on Wednesday that their public cloud services have achieved VMware vCloud Powered Status. eLINIA (www.elinia.com) and iomart Hosting (www.iomarthosting.com) say this status lets customers know that their cloud services are underpinned by VMware’s technology, namely VMware vSphere and VMware vCloud Director. Both of these announcements come out of the VMworld 2011 conference happening in Copenhagen this week.
This news comes less than a month after iomart Group named industry veteran Crawford Beveridge the company’s non-executive director.
iomart Hosting is a part of the VMware Service Provider Program and provides its VMware vCloud Powered Service as a set of cloud computing services, according to the press release.
“iomart Hosting specialises in high availability, fully managed cloud solutions and we quickly realised that to provide market leading solutions we needed industry-leading leading hypervisor and management technology,” Sarah Haran, managing director of iomart Hosting said in a statement.
iomart says its customers can move workloads from their VMware vSphere-based virtualized or private cloud environment to the VMware vCloud Powered service and back again. According to the press release, this application portability is a key differentiator that allows customers to achieve the flexibility and security they need.
“The VMware vCloud Powered program was developed to enable our service provider partners to differentiate themselves and help them bring their enterprise-class cloud services to market in this competitive landscape,” Gavin Jackson, director, vCloud & Service Providers, EMEA, VMware said in a statement. “We look forward to supporting iomart Hosting further as it delivers on the agility and performance customers are looking for in the cloud computing landscape.”
According to iomart, it sought VMware cVloud Powered status to expand its VMware-based cloud services and solutions. Its public cloud service has been designed with resellers in mind, according to the company, and offers convenient and scalable access to the VMware platform.
iomart Hosting is a subsidiary of iomart Group. It owns and managed its own network infrastructure, including five UK data centers and offers private and hybrid cloud, colocation, content delivery networks, IP transit, cloud storage and email.
eLINIA provides cloud computing services, managed hosting and infrastructure outsourcing.

Colocation Firm InfoRelay to Relocate Headquarters to Support Growth

Colocation provider InfoRelay Online Systems (www.inforelay.com) announced on Tuesday it will be relocating its headquarters from its current location of Sterling, Virginia to a larger office in Herndon, Virginia in response to the company’s recent growth.
Located at 13873 Park Center Road in Herndon, the new offices is a Class A office building attached to the Dulles Hilton Hotel.
Also known as the Hallmark building, it is home to several high-profile tenants, including Congressman Frank Wolf and companies such as Electronic Warfare Associates and Qivliq.
The building is minutes from Dulles International Airport, and features such amenities as on-site management, a fitness facility, food services, 24-hour security, abundant conference facilities and an airport shuttle.
Since the new location will house InfoRelay’s 24-hour Network Operations Center, it has been outfitted with redundant backup power systems, and will benefit from redundant fiber optic connectivity to InfoRelay’s Northern Virginia and Washington, DC data centers.
The larger office space and NOC ensure that the company will have room to grow in accordance with its future plans for expansion and evolution of its service portfolio.
The move was largely spurred by continued growth in financial and healthcare markets within the Washington, DC and Northern Virginia area resulting in the need for additional staff.

Colocation Firm C4L Expanding Bournemouth UK Data Center

UK data center operator C4L (www.c4l.co.uk) announced on Tuesday it has begun construction on phase two at its Bournemouth, UK data center.
The facility is being built to a Tier 2+ specification, and once complete will be one of the largest data centers in the South West.
The expansion of the Bournemouth data center will provide an additional 120 racks in 3,000 square feet of space, increasing capacity by two-thirds.
“Internet infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as more and more organizations become heavily reliant on online services and connectivity in order to run their business,” said Matt Hawkins, managing director of C4L. “With the adoption of cloud computing increasing and more and more applications and services being delivered away from organizations’ own premises, we experienced a high level of demand for phase one of the Bournemouth data center. So much so that the site reached full capacity within the first six months of it opening. The high level of demand for colocation space at the Bournemouth facility has prompted us to commence phase two of the build earlier than anticipated. The facility benefits from exceptionally low latency and excellent resilience as it’s connected to our private network, making it an ideal outside of London colocation facility. The Bournemouth data center is being built to Tier 2+ specifications and at this site we can offer a wide range of IT services.”
Phase two of the data center will feature N+1 redundancy on power and cooling, as well as backup generators which will take the full load of the building in the event that a main power failure occurs.
Riello will provide high energy efficiency via UPS systems, and Airedale will provide the sites cooling systems.
The building will have very early smoke detection apparatus supplies for full smoke, fire detection and fire suppression systems.
The facility’s air conditioning will use direct expansion based cooling technology combined with C4L’s cold aisle cooling practices for maximum efficiency.
C4L’s Bournemouth data center will also have advanced triple level security features, including a biometric entry system with a man trap, pin code swipe cards and full 24-hour digital CCTV.
Once completed, the facility will be able to offer colocation space, including quarter, half and full racks up to 32 Amp dual feeds as standard. The Bournemouth data centre will also benefit from high levels of monitoring on power and cooling, ensuring maximum resilience at the site.
C4L provides data center, Internet and connectivity services via its high speed fibre network of over 40 data centers across the UK and Europe.

Data Center Management Firm SynapSense Expands Operations to Asia

Data center infrastructure management solutions provider SynapSense (www.synapsense.com) announced on Wednesday that it has expanded its operations to the greater Asia Pacific region to meet demand for the company’s data center optimization platform.
This news comes a few months after SynapSense raised $16 million in Series C financing led by Crosslink Capital. According to SynapSense’s July announcement, the investment helped to provide global support for data center operations.
As part of the expansion, SynapSense plans to open an office in Singapore to serve as its Asia hub of operations. The office will provide technical support to existing customers as well as sales support for potential new customers in the Asia Pacific region. SynapSense says it is actively looking for candidates to expand its Asia team of engineers and project managers.
“SynapSense solutions are being rapidly adopted worldwide by leading data center operators seeking to optimize their energy efficiency, and our expansion to Asia will help us better support our growing list of customers and meet the surging demand for our technology in the region,” Peter Van Deventer, CEO of SynapSense, said in a statement.
According to the press release, at the core of the SynapSense Data Center Optimization Platform is its Active Control solution that optimizes data center efficiency by continuously aligning cooling capacity and saves customers up to 50 percent of cooling costs.
SynapSense says its data center optimization platform has been deployed worldwide. The company has received numerous green awards inlduing being named to the 2011 Global Clean Tech 100, the AlwaysOn 2011 GoingGreen Global 200 Top Private Companies and a 2011 California Clean Technology “Game Changer.”

Colocation provider DataBank Holdings (www.databank.com) announced on Wednesday it has appointed Kevin Ooley to chief financial officer.
The move comes a few months after private equity firm Avista Capital Partners acquired DataBank from private investment firm Freeman Group for $4 billion.
In his new position of CFO, Ooley will be providing DataBank with both financial management and high-level organizational strategy.
“We are absolutely thrilled to have Kevin join our team,” said Tim Moore, CEO of DataBank. “Kevin has a very strong background in finance and a wealth of senior management experience. We anticipate his influence will be a key factor to success in DataBank’s current growth initiative.”
Ooley has 20 years of experience creating and implementing many growth and operational strategies.
Prior to joining DataBank in 2011, Ooley served as CFO of Thompson Media Group. Prior to this, Ooley served as principal at capital private equity firm Lovett Miller & Company.
He was also a director of strategy for iXL Enterprises and a manager in Accenture’s Strategic Services practice.
Dallas-based DataBank provides managed data center and network services via its six facilities in New York, Houston and London.
